Hello Dr. Andreas Boettcher here from
the Scientific Advisory Board here at Kyäni with another episode of Kyäni
Wellness TV, an episode that’s extremely important where we answer the question: Is
the heart or the brain really to blame when it comes to some of the top threats
to your health, which are heart attacks and strokes. Stay tuned. Here’s a question for you, are the heart
or the brain to blame in the cases of a heart attack or a stroke? After all they
are the number 1 and number 3 killers here in the United States. However in the
majority of all of those cases, the heart and the brain are actually just fine.
After all, they are designed to outlive you. So if they are quote-unquote healthy,
where does the problem actually lie? Now are there some exceptions to what I’m
about to share with you? Absolutely there are, for the purposes of this video I
want to talk about the over 33,000 miles of arterial blood flow that line the
human body that’s enough miles to circle the globe two-and-a-half times the
question is, what are you doing to maintain the health of this information
highway? After all, your arteries and veins are responsible for delivering
oxygen and removing waste products like carbon dioxide and delivering nutrition
an exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide and delivering hormones and the list
goes on yet no one is actually talking about the health of this arterial blood
flow system. And so what we want to talk about in this video are two key terms:
arteriosclerosis and appro sclerosis now what is the difference well arterial
sclerosis is basically the hardening of the arteries where it becomes stiff it
can become brittle and as a result they can rupture and can break they can tear
and so forth. Atherosclerosis is where you have the buildup of that nasty gunk
and plaque that can include the arterial blood flow system and as a result create
backup increase pressure result in aneurysms the expansion of this and
where it can eventually rupture and which of course can be death depending
on where it’s located and the thing to understand about this is that you can
have arterial sclerosis the hardening of the arteries without having atherosclerosis however you can’t have a atherosclerosis without having arteriosclerosis so when you have arteriosclerosis you’ve got both. So as a
result what can be done to maintain the health and the vitality of
your arterial cardiovascular system? and that’s exactly what I want to talk to
you about in this video. Now I’m gonna come back to this prop here in just a
moment, but what I want to share with you is that when you start looking at when
atherosclerosis or arteriosclerosis begins it begins many years ago and of course
if we always hear about the heart attack or the stroke in our 40s or 50s or in
our 60s the problem is is that these arterial plaques and the ability of your
arteries to become brittle over time is not an event it doesn’t happen overnight
it happens over time. The question is when does it begin which brings me to a
very important study that I want to share with you because many of us are
under the false assumption that somehow arteriosclerosis or atherosclerosis is
an event meaning it just happened and boom and there it was. The problem with
that thinking is is that for these conditions to develop they take years of
poor choices and ill health for them to rear their ugly side effects: heart
attacks and or strokes or aneurysms and the list goes on. So what I wanted to do
was share with you a study from the American Journal of Pathology in 1998
talking about atherosclerosis development in young people and here are
just some of the conclusions from this study. All us teenagers sampled had fatty
streaks in some segments of their arterial system meaning that they had
already had evidence of the early formation of atherosclerosis. Number two,
fatty plaques increased steadily from 15 to 34 years and this was measured in
five-year increments so you can see that this time bomb has already started to
tick and now it’s simply a matter of time if left unchecked where the
potential for a cardiovascular event could likely occur. Obesity was a
positive risk factor and this is something I cannot implore enough. When
we look at the obesity of the epidemic here in the United States with over 40%
of adults being clinically obese not overweight–obese, and the onset of type 2
adult-onset diabetes one of being one of the fastest
growing epidemics in adults today it doesn’t take long and start realizing
that we’re walking a tightrope with our health and our ability to enjoy life to
its fullest for as many years that we all have on this planet today.
Unfortunately many of us are treating life as it as if it were a dress
rehearsal that we somehow get a second chance and worse yet this epidemic of
obesity is now spilling over to our children in fact I don’t even call it
adult onset diabetes anymore I just call it type-2 diabetes because
it is the fastest growing epidemic in our children today. So when you combine
this with the evidence of arterial plaque already starting to build in our
teenage years with the obesity epidemic it doesn’t take long to find out the health
crisis that we are facing. Smoking greatly exacerbated raised
lesions in the 24 to 34 age group and it doesn’t necessarily even have to be from
first hand smoke it can also be from secondhand smoke. 10% of the individual
in this study had advanced atherosclerosis consisting of plaques
with necrotic fat filled centers and fibrous crack caps meaning there was
necrotic dead tissue already lining the arterial wall that was with fat filled
centers of plaque and hard fibrous caps this is in our teenagers and so it
doesn’t take long for us to start realizing that we have to start making
better choices, not just for ourselves but for our children. When you start looking
at the list of complications and why this is so serious of course there’s
coronary artery artery disease right there’s the heart attack that we’ve all
heard about there’s the carotid artery disease which
are the strokes, the blood supply that leads to the brain.
Then there’s peripheral artery disease because if you have it into your
extremities into your legs with a significant build up of plaque it can
lead to pain and numbness and weakness and fatigue down into the extremities
and I want to make an important point about how hard this plaque can actually
become. I know something about this unfortunately firsthand not only through
my own practice and taking thousands of health
histories, but unfortunately through my father-in-law who has made some
drastically poor choices with his health has advanced atherosclerosis so hard is
the plaque, that when they went in they tried to use a diamond carbide tip to
drill this out and they could not penetrate the density and the hardness
of the plaque that was inside his arteries. I want you to think about that
minute–a diamond carbide tip. I could drill through a concrete wall no problem
with that drill tip, but they could not penetrate and open up his arterial blood
supply as a result of how hard this plaque can become. And of course it can
lead to aneurysms. So if I were to block this opening up and you’ve got
blood flow coming in this can basically start to expand like a balloon and of
course one of the severe complications is an aortic, which is the major artery
feeding the heart that can bloon up when ruptures can cause immediate death. And
then of course chronic kidney disease as a result of arthrosclerosis blocking
blood flow eliminating waste products through the kidneys, which can create
internal toxicity, inflammation, and of course kidney failure. So it’s not just
these top two that we need to be worried about our concern about, but it’s all of
these other things that arteriosclerosis can do and arteriosclerosis
can start with fatigue inability to concentrate pain in the extremities
weakness and so forth so you really need to start paying attention to these early
warning signs and start asking yourself am I really eating to live, or am i
living to eat. Meaning, am i giving my body the nutrition that it needs? Or am I
just emotionally eating because it’s socially acceptable, it’s fun, and it’s
what everybody else is doing. And I’m here to tell you if you do what your
neighbor does your chances are becoming a statistic of what everyone does are
greatly enhanced as a result. So let’s look at some of the causes of
atherosclerosis and this is just a list here of high blood pressure being first
and foremost, unregulated blood pressure causes stress and
the entire arterial system, it causes the arteries to start to break down the
pressure starts to increase, think about it like a garden hose right?
if I could increase the pressure it’s only a matter of time before the hose
will collapse upon itself. High cholesterol, meaning oxidized cholesterol,
and what we’re finding is more and more research it’s not necessarily the
cholesterol that’s the problem, it’s also maintaining a healthy
cholesterol ratio of HDL to LDL the good cholesterol to bad cholesterol, but it’s
also the oxidation of the LDL that creates a problem so you want to make
sure you have a diet that helps to keep inflammation at bay. Elevated
triglycerides which are the free-floating fatty acids that travel
through the bloodstream. Smoking and other sources of tobacco so that
includes chewing tobacco insulin resistance obesity and diabetes
and I just talked about my father-in-law and the challenge that he’s had as a
result of not managing it properly. Inflammation like lupus or
arthritis or rheumatoid arthritis or inflammation from diet or pollution and
toxicity are also a major contributor. Lack of exercise–I cannot tell you how
important that is because that’s also going to relate to this last one which
I’m going to come to you here in just a minute in terms of your body’s ability
to help strengthen your heart, strengthen the arterial walls to keep that natural
blood flow going, and the circulation and I’ve got a great visual to show you this
here in just a minute of course a poor diet, alcohol, and a diet
high in processed foods and unfortunately here in the United States
eighty percent of the American diet is composed of alcohol and processed food
and it’s no wonder that it’s the number one killer here in the United States and
it’s not just men ladies! Ladies, you’re just as vulnerable and one of the
fastest growing groups in this category as well, and then a lack of nitric oxide
and this is what I really want to talk to you about because you may have heard
the term nitric oxide it was originally called
endothelial relaxation factor and what that is is it’s basically a chemical
it’s a gaseous substance it’s very fleeting you can’t live without it
without five seconds it’s that important. It’s secreted by the endothelium, the smooth muscle layer that’s inside the arterial wall where
the chemical reaction occurs and what nitric oxide does is it allows them
blood vessels to relax it allows them to dilate and allows them to expand. They’re
incredibly important. Now the problem is that as we age, excluding arteriosclerosis or atherosclerosis, our ability to produce nitric oxide declines. You
factor in the previously mentioned conditions, as you can see this arterial plaquing
building up, our ability to produce nitric oxide significantly declines and
so this is really important, not to mention this, but you may not be able to
read this when we start to think about your heart beating a hundred thousand
beats per day can contribute to an attack on the arteries and if
it’s left unchecked these plaques can rupture they can erode they can lead to
blood clots and they can lead to an overworked and a scarred heart and
increase the risk of heart failure. I mean, think about having this floating around
inside your blood or fixed inside your arteries that is stiff inflexible and
not moving so if this isn’t what it should look like, this is actually what
your arteries should look like. Now this is a garden hose here I have it filled
with water and I want you to think about nitric oxide for a moment cuz if you’ve
ever seen these garden hoses they’re typically flat they shrink as you turn
the water off and they release the water that’s inside the hose and it makes it
for easy storage and so forth and when you go turn the faucet on and the water
flows through all of a sudden the hose starts to expand, it stretches out, and
that’s in essence what nitric oxide does. Nitric oxide relaxes the blood vessels
it maintains the health of the over 33,000 miles of arterioles that line the
human body to maintain their flexibility and the pliability and to help prevent
the onset and the build-up of arterial plaquing. Now it alone is not enough
because you have to maintain a healthy diet and a healthy exercise program
which are all natural stimulants to producing this invaluable, gaseous
substance that the body simply cannot live without. And as I’ve always said
and I will always tell you is that you cannot out supplement a poor diet. So the
question you really need to be asking yourself: Do you want arteries like
this as you age? Or do you want them to be soft and pliable and flexible with
unencumbered blood flow to the vital organs and the tissues so you can
concentrate and focus and perform an exercise and live a high quality of life?
This is what we want to help you to be able to maintain so that you can do
everything you can to avoid this very, very preventable condition. And so keep
this in mind as you start to understand where our nitric oxide fits into the
equation and how important this substance really is. So the question
becomes, where can you get your nitric oxide? Well this is why you’ve got to get
your healthy fruits and vegetables, arugula, spinach, collard greens, celery
beets, beet greens, carrots, bok choy, Rhubarb, Swiss chard, kale, and of course a
nitrate supplement and don’t forget good old-fashioned cardiovascular exercise
even if it’s just walking out the door for 10 minutes and 10 minutes back you
got 20 minutes of cardiovascular exercise you increase your blood flow
you increase your feel-good hormones you increase your nitric oxide production
and your ability to maintain a healthy quality of life is substantially
