Here in the Human
Nutrition Research Unit at Wageningen University, we are
experts in human intervention studies with over 40
years of experience. We have compiled a database
of 9,000 potential study participants from
different age groups. Recruitment can be carried
out quickly and efficiently. [WOMAN SPEAKING DUTCH]
Before starting a study, we follow a strict procedure
of informed consent. We make sure that
every participant knows exactly what to expect. Each participant receives
a personalized code to maintain privacy. We can perform several
studies simultaneously. Qualified staff are responsible
for collecting a wide range of biological samples. In order to test the
metabolic adaptation capacity of the body, many
different challenge tests can be carried out. Various kinds of
measurements can be performed before and
after the challenge tests. In addition to these
challenge tests, our facility is equipped to
perform all of the measurements relevant to interventions. Body composition can
be assessed using a wide range of techniques. For example, an MRI can be used
to assess food related brain activation, determine
fat distribution, and to measure inter-organ fat. Energy expenditure
can be measured during rest, after a
meal, and during exercise. Exercise testing is used
to assess aerobic capacity and physical fitness. Vascular and
endothelial function can be determined
using several methods. 24 hour blood
pressure measurements can also be performed. The length of a study visit
can range from 10 minutes up to many days. During the controlled
dietary interventions, dietary intake is
accurately calculated, and body weight is
strictly controlled. Experimental diets are
compiled and adjusted according to the
energy requirements of the individual participants. Completely controlled
dietary interventions can last from a few days
up to several months for hundreds of participants. The psychobiology
of food intake is tested in our eating
behavior and odor lab, where we test the
role of food and odor on oral food processing
and eating behavior. Our blood testing capabilities
allow for immediate processing of samples. Blood is drawn and directly
transferred to our lab, where it is further processed. The samples are
transferred to tubes labeled with a unique
registration number. All samples are registered
in our secure bio bank and stored in our temperature
monitored freezer system. Our laboratory facilities
offer a large range of innovative possibilities,
such as the analysis of fatty acid profiles and
carotenoids in both blood and food samples. We can also perform multiplex
analysis of proteins, such as cytokines or measure the
expression of genes in tissues, using PCR or high throughput
microarray analysis. Tissue samples are analyzed
in our histology lab. We also have facilities to
cultures cells, organoids or ex vivo tissues. In addition to following
established analysis methods, we can also develop new methods,
adjusted to the specific needs of each study. Here in our academic human
nutrition research facilities, we apply the most up to date
knowledge of human nutrition to all facets of research. In this video, we have
